Mission Statement

ELCA Advocacy Ministries

To advocate justice for all of creation and particularly the "least of these in our midst" in three key areas...
  • Church-educating congregations.
  • Legislative Advocacy- at local, state and federal levels.
  • Community Involvement- Partnering with other groups sharing our mission.

BASIS FOR ADVOCACY MINISTRY

GOD CALLS THROUGH WORD AND SACRAMENT

  • Baptism-called to a vocation of being the church in God's world.
  • Eucharist-Christ advocates for us calling us to care for others.
  • Moses speaking for God's people to Pharaoh (Ex. 1-12)
  • Prophets call us to "do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God."(Micah 6:8)
  • Jesus came to "preach good news to the poor…freedom for prisoners…to release the oppressed." (Luke 4)

CALL OF OUR CHURCH

ELCA Constitution

The Church will…serve in response to God's love to meet human needs, caring for the sick and the aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people, working for peace and reconciliation among the nations, and standing with the poor and powerless and committing itself to their needs (4.02.c).

To fulfill this purpose, our church shall…lift its voice in concord and work in concert with forces for good, to serve humanity, cooperating with church and other groups participating in activities that promote justice, relieve misery, and reconcile the estranged (4.03.g) and study social issues and trends, work to discover the causes of oppression and injustice, and develop programs of ministry and advocacy to further human dignity, freedom, justice, and peace in the world (4.03.l).

"The Church in Society: A Lutheran Perspective" 1991

HOW WE CHOOSE ISSUES

The ELCA is committed to work with and on behalf of the poor, the powerless, and those who suffer, using its power and influence with political and economic decision-making bodies to develop and advocate policies that seek to advance justice, peace, and the care of creation.

Social statements give voice to the prophetic mandate of this church, its calling to care for God’s world, and its commitment to reason together on social concerns. In so doing, they inform, guide, and challenge this church and its members. They are intended “for the equipment of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ” (Policies and Procedures of the ELCA for Addressing Social Concerns, 1998)
